![]() The effectiveness of the Search Command is dependent on a few factors, some of which are not well-explained by the manual or the in-game tutorial in "Unlucky Cloverfield." Any hidden items that can be found with another assigned to the Find Slot must exist. The player could help Brown by having Jennifer attack any Imps that may be blocking his path. While Imps may try to attack him or Jennifer, Brown will ignore them by proceeding to follow the scent of the hidden item. ![]() It is inevitable to expect Brown's pathfinding to bring Jennifer into contact with Imps. If the player is unable to find Brown, the Airship Map or Orphanage Map will reveal his location and Jennifer's. Should the item be found in another part of the Airship or Orphanage, Brown will claw on the door to the hidden item, waiting for Jennifer to catch up with him. When Brown has picked up a scent, he will trail after the scent to its known location. Alternatively, if Brown is unable to locate something, he will respond with a whimper. If Brown detects an item hidden in the environment, he will bark and proceed to find it. Brown's responses to the player will signal whether he has picked up the scent of something hidden in the environment. From there, Jennifer can instruct Brown to begin searching for items tied to the one assigned to the Search Slot. When an item has been assigned, the player will be able to issue a Search Command to Brown. Any items not intended for the Equip Slot or the Archive can be assigned to the Find Slot. While Brown is accompanying Jennifer, the player can enter the Inventory Screen to assign items to the Find Slot. Thus, Brown's absence in "The Little Princess," "Gingerbread House," "Stray Dog and the Lying Princess," and "Once Upon a Time" renders the Search System not only unavailable but also not required for the completion of their scenarios. In "The Unlucky Cloverfield," "Sir Peter," "Bird of Happiness," "The Goat Sisters," "The Mermaid Princess," "Rag Princess Sews," and "The Funeral," usage of the Search System is required to advance the scenarios of their respective chapters. Note that the Search System is only available whenever Brown is with Jennifer. To uncover hidden items in the environment, the player must rely on Brown by assigning an item to the Search Slot from the Inventory and issuing the Search Command in actual gameplay. While some items can be found and interacted with in normal gameplay, the vast majority are hidden from Jennifer and the player's view. Rule of Rose, as a late Sixth Generation console title for the PS2, follows those practices through its Search System. Some items exist just to provide backstory on the overall plot of the game, whereas others are only required to complete puzzles. To improve their odds of survival, the player is expected to explore their environment and scavenge accessible locations for weapons and healing items. The Search System is in some respects related to what were once common practices among the game's contemporaries in the Survival Horror genre. ![]() The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the Search System for future players of the game and current players who may or may not be aware of the various items that could be found throughout the chapters. Most items in the game are hidden from view and cannot be interacted with unless the player commands Brown to search for another item that is tied to hidden one. The Search System in Rule of Rose refers to the primary ability of Brown, who accompanies Jennifer after being freed by her in "The Unlucky Cloverfield." The purpose of the Search System in actual gameplay is to allow the player to advance the plot by searching for specific items related to the scenarios of the Airship and Orphanage chapters or to acquire healing items for Jennifer and Brown and junk items for the Gift Box.
